-The laundry basket is completely empty except for that 1/2 khaki pant leg.
-This doesn't make me mad. It makes me giggle. And, it gives me a reason to say, "Please clean your room!" once in awhile.
BUT, that doesn't explain how and why this happens! Any ideas?

Maybe you need over the laundry basket.
Madeline earns nickels for putting her laundry in the hamper. She still doesn't do it unless I tell her.
They are in good company, their Uncle Kory still does that.
This same thing happens to me. In fact, after just one day after the room was cleaned, there were at least 10 items of clothing on the floor. You would think that a kid who likes to play basketball would at least try to chuck his dirty clothes in the basket. :)
I'm just impressed that it only makes you giggle, and that you only have to calmly say "please clean your room" once in a while! You clearly already have it figured out better than I do:)
Elizabeth, Lisa, and Michelle--It is so good to know that this is a universal phenomenon. Although, Tawnia is it that Kory misses the laundry basket or that he makes you giggle???? And, Michelle, "calmly" may be the wrong word. :)
In our house here in Aspen the laundry room is TWO steps from the kids' bedroom - any dirty clothes end up there? HA! What hope do I have? :)
I have this exact problem too-- that is a GREAT pic! I could take one of the garbage can in the kids bathroom and it would look the same. Toilet paper and flossers all around it on the floor, and NOTHING inside!! I am so impressed with all your blogging these days! :)
Love it! The little pick-up elves just never seem to be on task...
